A CREW OF ONE                        The Odyssey of a Solo Marlin Fisherman
 by Carlos Bentos

"At a time when the great marlin species are highly endangered by commercial fishing operations, Carlos Bentos's example of catch-and-release along his lonely, courageous forays into offshore waters is both compelling and critical. He is a fisherman for all seasons, a character Hemingway would have enjoyed knowing." -- Dick Russell, author of Eye of the Whale

"That Carlos Bentos does what he does -- heading alone miles offshore to the Gulf Stream to pit himself solo against the most challenging billfish, marlin -- is remarkable. That he does it well enough to win tournaments over professional captains on fully crewed boats is astounding. That he returns from these adventures and orders his thoughts into lyrical, sensitive, soul-searching explanation of his passion borders on inconceivable. That is what he has done in A Crew of One."
Angus Phillips, The Washington Post

"A Crew of One is a love story, that of an intrepid fisherman and his intimacy with his boat, Caribeņa, the blue waters of the Atlantic, and above all the tail-walking white marlin he stalks alone in a big ocean. A captivating tale of both life and adventure that takes the reader far beyond fishing... One of the best reads ever between the covers of a book on man's chase of either fish or wildlife."  -- Bill Burton, former outdoors editor of The Baltimore Sun

Carlos Bentos is a good friend of mine and I've had the pleasure of reading an advance copy of his wonderful book. Until a combination of ailments of advancing age made it more prudent for me to stay off of boats heading out into the ocean, I spent many hours with him on Caribeņa looking for elusive billfish. I learned from those times that he is a master angler. When he wrote a special Introduction to a book I compiled and edited, I learned that he was also a master writer.

In A Crew of One he shows both of these talents in ways that make one stop and think, 'I wish I had done that,' or more importantly, 'I wish I had said that.' Whether from the deck of Caribeņa or from the 'Oceans of (his) Mind', Carlos shows us that he is one of those rare few who carefully observe both lights and shadows. And, even more rare, one who can beautifully describe them.   Joe Barse,  former President, Derby Champion, and Historian of the Ocean City Light Tackle Club
